Do You Often Suffer From Dry Eyes? Here Is A Solution That Can Help!

    Last updated 1 year ago

When your eyes become tired, they may become dry and irritated. Some people, though, experience these symptoms on a regular basis, a condition that is usually diagnosed as dry eye syndrome. If you’re currently suffering from this condition, look below to learn about a helpful treatment option, punctal occlusion, from your eye doctor:

    Tears

You may think you only produce tears when you are emotional, but in reality, you produce tear liquid constantly. Without this liquid, your eyes would feel itchy and uncomfortable, which you may have felt the last time you stayed up too late. Tear liquid comes from lacrimal glands that are located above and behind the upper eyelids. These glands produce tears and secrete them into your eyes, lubricating your eyes so that you can blink comfortably.

The tear film is drained through channels, or nasolacrimal ducts, which empty into your nose. Before the tear film reaches the drainage channels, it passes through the lacrimal punctum, which is a small opening in each of the lower lids.

    Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome is a common disorder affecting roughly 30 million Americans, and is an abnormality in the production of mucus or lipids, which help make up the tear film. The most common causes of dry eye syndrome are an inability to produce enough tears or overactive drainage channels that cause excessive tear evaporation.

    Punctal Occlusion

In cases where dry eye syndrome is caused by over-drainage of the tear film, your eye doctor may recommend punctal occlusion. Punctal occlusion is a treatment in which an eye surgeon inserts a tiny plug in one or both of the lacrimal punctum. This slows drainage, allowing the tear film to linger on the eyes and relieve symptoms of dry eye syndrome.

What Is The Difference Between Farsightedness And Nearsightedness?

    Last updated 1 year ago

Nearsightedness and farsightedness are two of the most common causes of blurred vision and two common reasons why people visit their eye doctor. However, these optical conditions are quite different and dramatically affect what a person can see. Find out which of these conditions you might be experiencing by learning about their differences:

    Farsightedness

Hyperopia is the technical term for farsightedness, which occurs because the ball of the eye is too short, causing the eye lens to focus an image too far past the retina. People who suffer from farsightedness are unable to bring close objects into focus. This means that typing, reading, watching T.V., and performing other tasks close to the face can be difficult or impossible to do without corrective eyewear. In some cases, a child’s farsightedness will decrease as they grow into their eyes.

Farsightedness is easy to repair by adding a corrective layer that lengthens the distance between the light and the retina. Additionally, advancements in LASIK eye surgery have made it easier to permanently repair farsightedness.

    Nearsightedness

Nearsightedness, also known as myopia, is one of the most common causes of blurred vision. Nearsightedness occurs because entering light doesn’t reach the retina, which is located at the back of the eye. When the eye experiences a change in shape, the light will focus just short of the retina, causing a blur in vision. You might be suffering from nearsightedness if you experience blurred vision when looking at objects from a distance. If you have to squint your eyes to read a sign across the street or make out shapes across the room, you should have an eye exam.

Whether you’re suffering from farsightedness or nearsightedness, the vision specialists at Willis-Falkenberg Eye Care can help you achieve better vision acuity. With over 40 years of experience in refractive surgery and laser vision correction, Willis-Falkenberg Eye Care can help you or a loved one get the vision you deserve.
