Many people are familiar with the term astigmatism, but few know what the visual impairment means. Astigmatism causes your eyes to make objects appear misshapen and distorted. Astigmatisms may occur with nearsightedness or farsightedness. Among eye impairments, astigmatism is the most common abnormality. Learn more about how to live with your astigmatism by reading through the following information.
Corrective Eye Wear
One way of coping with astigmatism is wearing corrective lenses or glasses. Corrective eyeglasses are a good solution if you have never worn any sort of corrective eyewear before. Glasses are typically better for children who may be reluctant to wear contacts.
Corrective eye lenses come in a variety of forms to remedy astigmatism. The most common forms of contact lenses that treat astigmatism are rigid contact lenses, gas permeable contact lenses, and soft contact lenses. If you choose to wear contact lenses, then remember to practice proper hygiene to prevent an eye infection from occurring.
Surgery
Undergoing laser eye surgery is another way to address your astigmatism. During laser eye surgery, laser beams reshape your cornea to change the way it perceives light. Laser eye surgeries are typically outpatient procedures and the operation itself lasts no longer than 30 minutes in most cases. The three main types of corrective laser eye surgeries are photorefractive keratectomy, laser epithelial keratomileusis, and laser in situ keratectomy. A photorefractive keratectomy laser eye surgery removes a piece of your corneal tissue. A laser epithelial keratomileusis utilizes alcohol to loosen your corneal surface cells before removing them. A laser-assisted situ keratectomy procedure is more commonly known as LASIK surgery.

Eyesight is based on the eye’s ability to refract light in a certain way to enable vision. A cataract is a cloud located in the crystalline lens of the eye, developing different degrees of opacity and obstructing light. Though cataracts progress slowly, they can cause vision loss to the point of blinding if untreated. The following covers how humans develop cataracts:
Risks
Cataracts, which comes from the Latin word for waterfall, develop for a number of reasons. High-risk factors include long-term exposure to ultraviolet light or radiation or as a result of diabetes, hypertension, or advanced age. Outside of that, genetics can predispose individuals at an early age. Commercial airline pilots are three times more likely to develop cataracts and are thought to be caused by excessive exposure to radiation.
Causes
Though there are a number of cataract types, the cause lies on the lens behind the iris and the pupil. This lens is like a camera lens, directing light and adjusting focus. It’s made mostly of water and protein. The protein is designed to stay arranged so that the lens is clear and light easily passes through. However, when the protein clumps together, a cataract is formed. Without treatment or prevention, the cataract will continue to grow larger, clouding more of the lens while decreasing vision.
Options
Good nutrition, proper sun protection, and regular comprehensive dilated eye exams can help keep cataracts at bay. Early treatment can help save your eyesight, but surgery is available to remove the cataract.
