Do you hate reaching for reading glasses when you already have contacts in? Do the thick lenses you need to correct your hyperopia (farsightedness) drive you crazy? If you have poor eyesight and are not a good candidate for Lasik surgery, then a refractive lens exchange may be the right procedure for you.
Understanding Refractive Lens Exchange
As you might expect from the name of the procedure, refractive lens exchange involves swapping out your eye’s natural lens for an artificial one. This procedure is similar to the one used in cataract surgery. With cataracts, your lens becomes cloudy, which impairs your vision. During cataract surgery, your lens is replaced with a clear, artificial one so that you can see clearly.
In the past, only monofocal replacement lenses were available, which meant you could only see clearly at a particular distance. With the invention of multifocal lenses, people are now able to see both up close and far away, allowing people with hyperopia or presbyopia (nearsightedness) to undergo this procedure.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Refractive lens exchange is a relatively new development in the field of vision correction so many people don’t know that it is an option. The following are good candidates for this procedure:
- People who suffer from extreme hyperopia: Extreme hyperopia can’t be treated with Lasik eye surgery so refractive lens exchange may be your best bet for a permanent solution.
- People with early cataracts: If you’re beginning to develop clouding in your lenses and you’re on the way to cataracts, then refractive lens surgery is a good choice. Once you have an artificial lens, there’s no chance you will develop cataracts.
- People with presbyopia: The new multifocal lenses used in refractive lens exchange can allow you to see both up close and far away without the need for bifocals or reading glasses.

Eye exams are vital to maintaining your eye health. If it has been a while since you have had an eye exam, then read through the article below for information on what to expect:
Eyesight Test
As you might expect, a key component of an eye examine is a test of your eyesight. An eye doctor may have you cover one eye with your hand and read letters of varying sizes on a poster across the room. Your eye doctor may also have more advanced methods of testing your eyesight. All tests are done to determine whether you’re nearsighted or farsighted or have astigmatism or another eye condition that is affecting your vision.
Muscle Function
Your eye doctor will test the muscle function of your eyes by having you move your eyes in different directions and angles. An eye doctor also checks to see if you exhibit signs of involuntary movement or muscle weakness.
Field Test
A field test checks out your peripheral vision. This type of vision will probably decrease with age, but a significant reduction in peripheral vision may be a sign of eye disease or a neurological disorder.
Eye Pressure Test
One of the more unexpected tests you may encounter at an eye exam is an eye pressure test. A small burst of air will be puffed into your eye to check your reflexes and eye pressure. This test checks for glaucoma, as high eye pressure may be a sign of this disease.
Pupil Dilation
Your eye doctor will probably also dilate your eyes with special eye drops. This allows the doctor to examine the internal structures of your eyes to make sure they’re healthy and disease-free.

Have you ever wondered what the inner structures of the eye look like or what the functions of tears are? In this video, you’ll learn how the pupil and lens work together to focus light on the retina, which in turn sends signals to your brain via the optic nerve. This allows you to see the world around you. Tears are crucial as a disinfectant and to wash away the impurities that your eye encounters.
